These vehicles are called taxable heavy vehicles, and truckers with taxable vehicles must report and pay Form 2290 to the IRS. Truckers with heavy vehicles that don’t belong in the taxable category should report Form 2290 as tax–suspended vehicles. They need not pay any 2290 tax payments. Truckers with taxable and tax–suspended heavy vehicles must report Form 2290 HVUT on time and get the proper Schedule 1 copy within the deadline.

Pro-rated Form 2290 taxes are estimated based on the vehicle’s first used month.

Usually, the tax season starts in July and last till next June. Truckers and trucking taxpayers must estimate their Form 2290 HVUT reports for the whole year and pay them in advance during the beginning of the tax season (July). But for heavy vehicles used or used away from July, IRS charges 2290 taxes on a pro-rated basis. Partial period or pro-rated Form 2290 taxes are charged based on the heavy vehicles’ first used month. The last date to report pro-rated Form 2290 truck taxes is the end of the following month of the vehicle’s first used month. So, you must calculate your pro-rated Form 2290 tax reports from April to June 2023 and report them by May 31, 2023.
