Hello, Truckers! We had another great form 2290 HVUT tax filing season for the tax period, 2022-2023. We hope you have reported form 2290 truck taxes to the IRS and received the IRS stamped schedule 1 copy to operate your trucking business smoothly.
Truckers must report and pay form 2290 truck taxes for their taxable heavy vehicles for every tax season during the beginning of the tax season. A heavy vehicle or truck should have a total gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more to enter the taxable vehicle category. Form 2290 has different total gross weight categories from A to V in which each category belongs to a different gross weight varying from 55,000 pounds to 75,000 pounds. The form 2290 payment also varies for each weight category. Therefore, truckers should estimate the total gross weight of their heavy vehicles and pay the tax dues accordingly.
Also, the heavy vehicle should be estimated to cover more than 5,000 miles (7500 miles for agricultural/logging vehicles) to become eligible for form 2290 truck taxes. Truckers and taxpayers must determine their HVUT returns based on these taxable criteria and report form 2290 to the IRS. The important thing is that taxpayers should calculate the taxes and pay them in advance ahead of the tax period to the IRS.
Truckers should also report form 2290 HVUT for the heavy vehicles that don’t fall under the taxable categories as tax suspended vehicles. They don’t need to pay any tax dues for these heavy vehicles to the IRS.
But what should you do when your tax-suspended vehicle comes into the taxable category or your heavy vehicle’s total gross weight increases from your reported weight category?
You must file for form 2290 amendment to the IRS under an increase in vehicle’s gross weight or tax suspended vehicle exceeding mileage limit.
Increase in Vehicle’s Total Gross Weight
When you had already reported your form 2290 HVUT for the tax period under a weight category, and the total gross weight of your vehicle had changed due to demands and circumstances, you should report a form 2290 amendment under this category. You should file for a form 2290 amendment to the IRS, report the total gross weight changes, pay the tax difference and get the proper schedule 1 copy from the IRS.
Exceeded Mileage Limit
If your tax-suspended heavy vehicle has managed to travel more than 5,000 miles on the public highways, you should report a form 2290 amendment under this category. You must report your form 2290 truck taxes, pay the appropriate tax dues and get the proper schedule 1 copy from the IRS.
