An overview about Excise Tax Form 720

Businesses and individuals that do business in the U.S. are required by law to file taxes with the federal government. A variety of forms are filed based on varying circumstances of the individual taxpayer or company. A Form 720 is also known as a Quarterly Federal Excise Tax Return.

Who Must File

You must file Form 720 if:

  • You were liable for, or responsible for collecting, any of the federal excise taxes listed in Parts I and II of Form 720 for a prior quarter and you have not filed a final return; or
  • You are liable for, or responsible for collecting, any of the federal excise taxes listed in Parts I and II of Form 720 for the current quarter.

When to File

You must file a return for each quarter of the calendar year as follows:

For First Quarter, that is Quarter covering Jan, Feb & March the due date is April 30th.

For Second Quarter, that is Quarter covering Apr, May & Jun the due date is July 31st.

For Third Quarter, that is Quarter covering Jul, Aug & Sep the due date is Oct 31st.

For Fourth Quarter, that is Quarter covering Oct, Nov & Dec the due date is Jan 31st of the following year.
