Truckers Who Missed Aug. 31, Tax Deadline for 2290 tax filing?

IRS Federal Heavy Vehicle Use TaxForm 2290 is due on August 31. for the tax year 2016-17. The filing season for Form 2290 filers is July 1 through June 30. You must file Form 2290 for the month you first use the taxable vehicle on public highways during the reporting period.

If you missed the August 31 tax 2290 filing deadline, don’t panic. Here’s some advice from the IRS.

File as soon as you can.  If you owe taxes, you should file form 2290 and pay taxes as soon as you can. This will help minimize the interest and penalty charges. There is no penalty for filing a late return if you are due a refund.

Pay as much as you can.  If you owe tax but can’t pay it all at once, try to pay as much as you can when you file your tax return. Pay the remaining balance as soon as possible to stop further penalties and interest.

Form 2290 must be filed by the last day of the month following the month of first use. If you first use multiple vehicles in more than one month, then a separate Form 2290 must be filed for each month.

If you place an additional taxable truck on the road during any month other than July that was registered in your name, you are liable for the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax (Form 2290) on it, prorated for the months during which it was in service. You must file Form 2290 for these trucks by the last day of the month following the month the vehicle was first used on public highways.
